Nauru Airlines has become the first airline to join the On Us Australian Business Coalition for Safeguarding Children program.

The initiative, launched in November 2024 by the Australian Childhood Foundation raises awareness of the role that all businesses can play in safeguarding children and young people wherever they are. Founding members have included The Y, Westpac, IHG Hotels & Resorts, TikTok, The GPT Group and TBWA\Australia.

Nauru Airlines management and operational team members participated in training workshops designed to support organisations to identify risks and responsibilities and review how current policies and practices align with Australia’s national Child Safeguarding Principles. These workshops were supported by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to support child safeguarding measures for Pacific airlines.

“With operations in Nauru, Australia and beyond, we come into contact with thousands of children and young people annually and we endeavour at all times to take utmost care of their wellbeing, as we do with all passengers,” said James Blake, Nauru Airlines Head of Commercial.

“Safeguarding children is a consideration which permeates to every part of our business.

“As an air services operator, our duty of care to all passengers is a responsibility we take very seriously, from our very youngest passenger to our respected elders, “ said Blake.

“Under the Safeguarding Children training program we gained additional insights which have been invaluable as we continue to refine our policies and procedures and our ongoing operations as an integral, child-safe airline company.

“Nauru Airlines has now established a Child Safeguarding Committee, Project and Action Plan to ensure we continue to perform best practices in accordance with the 10 National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.”

Phil Doorgachurch, General Manager of the Strategic Safeguarding Children Initiatives Secretariat, Australian Child Safeguarding Business Coalition applauded Nauru Airlines decision to participate.

“We are very encouraged to see a genuine commitment by Nauru Airlines which started at senior leadership and is now an intentional and ongoing program within the company,” said Phil Doorgachurch, General Manager of the Strategic Safeguarding Children Initiatives Secretariat, Australian Child Safeguarding Business Coalition.

“When one prominent organisation in a sector, industry, region or country makes a strategic commitment to embed Child safeguarding principles and practices into corporate culture, other organisaitons will often follow suit.

“Our aim is to support many industries in elevating awareness including supporting the aviation sector and airline operators to, from and within Australia and the Pacific Region.”
